Hello! Welcome to the 'humble' terrene of Shaniir1 - a vast, impossible planet. This mass amid space is colossal; believed to be around 400 times the size of earth's sun, and over 800 times its mass, with unnatural planetary gravity and pressure to boot. Unlike the usual definition of a planet, it does not orbit around a sun - instead, suns orbit around it. Around this space-giant are hundreds of rings of debris containing asteroids, planets, gas-giants and the like; two of such rings containing suns that remain trapped within Shaniir's gravitational pull. The two suns - one red, one blue - are known as Calin2 and Brukke3, respectively, and their rotations around the planet are associated with the ages of the Shadiir race. (See this thread for more on the suns and their role in Shadiir's age.) Calin is in a closer ring, while Brukke is further back, therefore the time it takes for a revolution around the planet tends to differ. The planet's surface is cold and uninhabitable until the suns pass near the surface, scorching the planet and re-heating the oceans of lava to a boiling point where they burn on and harden only very shortly before another rotation of the suns. After a sun's blaze across the terrain, the land is warm enough to inhabit for a few days before needing to retreat back into the depths of the complex tunnels and underground empires warmed by the planet's interior heat that make up the areas in which the vast majority of the Shadiir population dwell.
The main layer of its terrain - or, the crust of the planet - is primarily iron rusted bright red with age, jade, and andesite, creating a ruddy crimson planet with long, jagged green-and-white lines of jade deposits. The massive inhabitants of the planet create a large amount of carbon-dioxide that gathers, splits, and condenses in the atmosphere to form grey-to-black clouds of pure carbon, and layers of pure oxygen that are forced back to ground-level by gravity as they condense. The sky is almost always filled with massive, rumbling booms and flashes of bright white as the oxygen molecules in the carbon dioxide violently split away from the carbon molecules, and the resulting atomic energy is harvested by large, strangely triangular generator-ships (an imported invention of the T'jurn) that are commonly seen zooming around in large masses in the sky, and cleanly power the majority of Shaniir's technology. The compression and condensation of the carbon clouds leads to eventual 'rain'; but as the carbon falls closer to the surface, clusters form into massive structures, and the immense pressure of the giga-planet almost immediately creates speckles of grey-to-white diamond that fall across the planet on regular intervals, commonly re-introduced into the planet's system by melting in the lava oceans across the surface, or gathering in mass amounts on the peaks of the mountain ranges that streak Shaniir like giant teeth.
The sentient inhabitants on this planet are known as the Shadiir4. The male and females generally tend to have different bodily looks about them, but are most certainly the same species. Despite differences, they share the large majority of their physical attributes, and a more detailed explanation of their appearance can be found on this thread. The males are thinner, smaller, and have more compact, sleek frames with little outliers to the rule; though there have been some rare examples otherwise. Males are made for running, tunneling, and taking care of young. They dig out their homes deep within the stony terrain of Shaniir for their chitlins5, who are too weak at their young age to leave the secure innards of an intricately dug cavern. Males tend to be gentler, kinder, and quieter, leaving the larger half of their species to dominate most of the planet's activities, and though personalities can always stray away from the norm, it is the most common for them to be the subordinates. The females are fighters and hunters, usually larger, bulkier, and stronger of build. They are the ones who do heavier work, as well as hunt and fight for their families. They are typically the warmongers, with harsh or dominating personalities. They are the planet's defensive force; the ones fighting if another species is hostile towards them.
Aside from the general difference in size and strength, there are obvious, as well as not-so obvious characteristics between the two genders. Males have beaks and bat-like, leathery wings, with talons that are broad and flat - they form a spade when held together - more suited to digging. Females have more horse-like muzzles, feathered wings, and cruelly curved talons meant to inflict maximum damage, and are one of the very few things with the ability to tear through a Shadiir's scales. Male's beaks are sharply pointed at the end, useful both for digging intricately or helping hatchlings out of their massively thick shells, as chitlins are unable to escape their egg without outside help. They aren't usually used for defense, for if the beak breaks or cracks, it cannot grow back or heal. Their leathery wings are more suited for a life of tunneling, as having feathers would weigh them down as the dirt got trapped within the quills. Their flight is noisy due to the lack of sound-canceling feathers, however, and they make lousy night-hunters; though their speed in flight is superior to a female's. Female's muzzles are made with incredibly powerful jaws and thick, sharp teeth capable of cracking through bone. Their wings make them spectacular fliers and silent killers, though their feathers need near constant maintenance to be kept in prime condition.
Footnotes;
1- Shaniir, pronounced Shun-YEAR.
2- Calin, the red sun of Shaniir pronounced Kha-LEEN.
3- Brukke, the blue sun of Shaniir pronounced Broo-KAI
4- Shadiir, pronounced Sha-DEAR.
5- Chitlins are baby Shadiir.
